Revolutionaries’ Wives

Everyone knows the saying, “Behind every successful man stands a woman.” But what does it really mean to “stand behind” a genius? What price does the woman standing behind him pay, and why, in fact, does she stand behind him rather than beside him? And why does she disappear from the stage of history when he achieves worldwide fame?
At the center of “Revolutionaries’ Wives” are three men whose revolutions remain relevant to all of us to this day, alongside their wives – women whose contribution to those revolutions was never acknowledged.
The play enters the Freuds’ bedroom and explores Martha Freud’s role in her husband’s theories of female sexuality; seeks justice for Jenny Marx, born a baroness yet fighting alongside her husband Karl for workers’ rights; and restores the dignity of Xanthippe, Socrates’ wife, who was unfairly turned into the symbol of a wicked wife who makes her husband’s life miserable.
